Revitalize Milwaukee Block Build

Posted By Sean Cullen On August 20, 2020

This past weekend, JP Cullen participated in the Revitalize Milwaukee’s Block Build MKE event. This annual event is where volunteers and community partners come together to transform a neighborhood block in one weekend.

Revitalize Milwaukee

Revitalize Milwaukee is a non-profit organization whose goal is to preserve affordable housing and revitalize vulnerable neighborhoods throughout Milwaukee and Waukesha counties.

Revitalize Milwaukee transforms communities by providing free, critical home repairs and comprehensive services to low-income veterans, seniors, and people with disabilities.

Block Build MKE

Every year, Revitalize Milwaukee hosts the Block Build MKE weekend event. On this weekend, corporations and individuals work on up to 30 homes that are owned by low-income elderly, veterans, and/or living with a disability.

JP Cullen’s team of volunteers helped repair a home for a 45-year-old man and his three daughters who have lived in the Clarke Square neighborhood for almost 10 years. Our team was able to help with some repairs around the family’s home and make it more secure for them.

Our team was able to complete about 95% of the scope of work on Saturday. Inside the home, our team painted all the walls in the living room, hallways, kitchen, and the daughters’ bedroom. The team painted the kitchen cabinets and the daughters’ room cabinets as well as installed new hardware, new bedroom doors, and replaced the face of cabinets.

On the exterior of the house, the team removed trash, landscaped, mulched, and set the backyard gate post in concrete to make the back yard more secure from intruders. Areas of the foundation wall were painted to match the existing white brick. The largest project was the tear down and rebuild of the back porch. This took thought and careful planning to ensure the structure was built safely and in time.
