The Memorial Medical Center addition expanded the facility to better meet patient needs while providing a framework for future improvements and expansions.

The addition tied into the existing hospital and provided a new entry for patients and visitors. With the new entry, lobby, and elevator core, access to inpatient services improved.

The project added sixteen surgery suites, 69 inpatient beds for surgery and oncology, and a regional cancer center containing state-of-the-art treatment equipment providing comprehensive cancer services to patients in one location.

The hospital entry leads to a two-story atrium that connects a 10,000-square-foot conference and education center, located on the lower level.

The exterior was faced in brick that matched the present hospital. Color variations in bands and groups provided design interest and distinguish the cancer center from the rest of the facility.

The project was designed to include a seven-level, three-bank elevator tower and to the capacity to add five additional floors. Another structural consideration was building earthquake resistance into a rigid concrete structure. This required special attention to beam connections
to resist primary lateral forces. Other code considerations included providing sprinklers throughout the facility and ensuring handicapped accessibility. The regional cancer center also
required the installation of high powered linear accelerators, requiring four-foot thick walls,
high-density concrete, and steel plates to shield the radiation.

The project presented several challenges. The extremely restricted construction site, demanded careful planning of materials deliveries, layout of staging areas, materials storage, and construction sequencing. There was no room to spare for excess materials. The site also presented a challenge for concrete pouring. With very little space outside the building's footprint, and with the presence of the existing structure, the reach of the crane required concrete pours to be planned very carefully.
