Historical Restoration & Preservation

J. P. Cullen & Sons is an industry leader in Historical Restoration and Landmark Preservation. Look at the restorative work we have completed on some of the most famous landmarks and historic buildings in Wisconsin and Illinois.

Historic Coronado Theater Project, Rockford, IL
The expansion of the existing Coronado Theater allowed the stage house to be enlarged, improved the stage-level support areas and load-in areas, and converted original apartments on the second and third levels into support areas and dressing rooms to meet requirements of major theatrical road companies.

Milwaukee City Hall Historical Restoration Project, Milwaukee, WI
The work required on this construction restoration project included repairing the chipped and cracked terra-cotta sculptures and designs, upgrading the 1,900  windows, and replacing the copper roofs on the City Hall's two spires.  The general contracting project also called for repairing the exterior sandstone and replacing hundreds of thousands of bricks.

Wisconsin State Capital Rehabilitation Project, Madison, WI
The rehabilitation of the Wisconsin State Capitol, the State of Wisconsin's most important office building, included public and private spaces. The Governor's office suite was completed 12 months ahead of schedule. The entire complex project was delivered 16 months ahead of schedule because of collaboration on design and engineering during the preconstruction phase. The construction consisted of the restoration of all four wings, the rotunda, and underground tunnel. Over a 12-year period, Cullen completed $130 million of work on the Capitol.

Black Point Estate Preservation Project, Lake Geneva, WI
Black Point is an estate on the south shore of Geneva Lake in Wisconsin, built in 1888 as a summer home by Conrad Seipp, a beer tycoon from Chicago. From the roof to the railings on the porches, Cullen undertook a total restoration of the entire exterior of the building as well as building new steps leading down to the lake.

Mount Olivet Chapel Historic Restoration Preservation Project of the "Little Chapel", Janesville, WI
The "Little Chapel" located high on a hill in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Janesville, Wisconsin, was built circa 1900. This diminutive chapel incorporates both Romanesque and Gothic architecture.  The job consisted of stained glass repairs or replacement, masonry fixes, new roof, and plaster and tile floor restoration.

Milton House Historical Restoration & Addition Project, Milton, WI
The project consisted of the restoration of a historic hexagonal building with the recreation of a rectangular addition that was originally a hotel. The new addition houses a museum, research area, and administrative offices for the Milton Historical Society. The masonry restoration on the hexagonal building had to meet original specifications, which included custom made lime gravel that was applied to complete the exterior. The original application of lime gravel on this structure was a precursor to poured in-place concrete. This structure is one of less than ten still existing in the United States.
