Project Description
The new 35,000 square-foot building will be the first “green” government building in the City of Hartford, built with sustainable methods and energy efficient design. It will double the size of the current library and provide space for community groups and a spacious patio overlooking the Mill Pond in the heart of the city. Mike Gelhausen, library director commented in an interview, “We especially encourage the public to use the facility. The library is an element in the community that provides free services. Our current facility is so crowded and has accessibility problems with parking and being on the upper level, which is just not a comfortable environment for people. The new facility will provide a variety of meeting places for the community inside and outside. We call it the community’s living room.
