Project Description: Cullen carpentry crews, masonry crews, cement finishers, iron workers, laborers and operators pulled together to complete a $12 million project for two campuses for Blackhawk Technical College, the central campus, located in Janesville, and the Monroe campus, located just off Highway 11 in Monroe, Wis. |

The Janesville campus added a 90,000-square-foot addition to the existing 200,000-square-foot facility for additional computer labs, classroom and office space, and firing range used by local law enforcement. The task demanded approximately 4,000 cubic yards of concrete and 45,000 blocks. The Monroe campus added 15,000 square-feet to meet the nursing program demand, enhance the media center, and increase general classrooms. According to the project manager, “The greatest challenge was maintaining safe access to the buildings during regular classroom hours. The facility was occupied during the construction period from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m.” Special entryways created safe avenues for students and staff to enter and exit the building while construction took place. “Project management, overall detail, working with the customer and understanding what our business is—educating students,” is how Cullen met their needs according to Kaylen Betzig, Vice President of Learning Support at Blackhawk Technical College, when asked about Cullen’s performance. “What I really liked about them was their availability. If I called the project manager or superintendent with an issue, for example, noise affecting student learning, they were always right there, helping out, making the necessary changes and really strived toward understanding our needs. I give J.P. Cullen an A++.” |
