For J.P. Cullen & Sons Inc,. no project is ever the same as the last. President Dave Cullen explains that on each project, the company encounters a new set of challenges to overcome. "That's the excitement of the job and the business," he states, "It's always varying. There's new markets [and] new challenges in front of you. You're never bored."
Based in Janesville Wisconsin, J.P. Cullen & Sons is a general contractor that specializes in masonry, industrial, concrete, historic restoration and preservation, and rigging and erection projects. Cullen's great-grandfather, John Patrick Cullen, founded the company in 1892.

Badger High School needed space for another 500 students and updated arts facilities to serve more than 2,100. Its small weightroom was inadequate to meet the needs of the athletes and the health and lifetime fitness physical-education curriculum.
The solution was two, two-story additions to minimize the footprint on an already tight 40-acre site. The 21-classroom addition accomodates more than 500 students. The arts and fitness addition has several unique features, beginning with a dramatic two-story atrium and a 24-foot skylight connecting the existing building to the new.

The county-owned school in Elkhorn serves children with the physical and emotional disabilities from early childhood through high school. Plunkett Raysich, Milwaukee, wanted to design the school with sensory stimulation and security in mind.
The firm also needed to meet the needs of Walworth County Board, which required transparency throughout construction of the school. Abie Khatchadourian, project manager with Plunkett Raysich, said architects talked extensively with teachers to build classrooms, play centers, hallways and even toilets that better "helped teachers held the kids."

City Hall is history lesson in the making
Engberg Anderson Inc. and J.P. Cullen & Sons Inc. looked to the past to preserve the future of Milwaukee City Hall. Charles Engberg, partner in charge for project architects of record, Engberg Anderson, Milwaukee, said the city conducted research and held a symposium to explore ways to restore the exterior of the German Renaissance Revival-style building.

In Madison, Wis., U.S., Manitowoc cranes helped to build the second phase of a campus for computer software company, Epic. JP Cullen, a Wisconsin-based contractor used a Potain MDT 412, a Potain MDT 302 and a Manitowoc Model 16000 crawler crane for the job. The cranes constructed a 2,000-car parking garage and four office buildings. A 40 USt (35 t) Grove RT 540E was also on site as a support crane for various lifting jobs.

The master builder concept has been around for millennia. It was master builders who created Europe’s great landmarks, for example. Today’s construction industry, however, tends to consist of general contractors and construction managers. But one Wisconsin builder is working to adapt the master builder model to the 21st century
J. P. Cullen & Sons, a general contracting firm founded in 1892, has been consistently ranked among the top 400 contractors in the United States and is the only Wisconsin-based contractor to have achieved the prestigious ISO 9001:2000 Certification. But those accolades aren’t enough for Cullen’s 600 employees, says Director of Marketing Tristan McGough. “We want to create buildings that stand the test of excellence,” he says. “Buildings that have substance and esthetic longevity.”
